The Home Hill Estate Pinot Noir 2023 is a striking example of cool-climate winemaking, with its deep dark ruby colour and vibrant aromas of sweet red cherry, blackberries, and boysenberries, underpinned by earthy forest floor notes.

The palate is richly concentrated, revealing layers of chocolate, almond, and a touch of vanilla, balanced by uplifting sweet fruit.

This Pinot Noir is soft and silky on the back palate, with fine chalky tannins and a long, elegant aftertaste. With excellent structure and balance, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 15 years.

Tasting Notes

This wine includes 3% whole bunch fermentation to enhance its structure and complexity. It was matured in French oak barrels (20% new oak) for 10 months, contributing to its delicate oak influence, with hints of vanilla and spice. The careful use of oak and natural winemaking techniques allow the fruit’s purity to shine while adding subtle depth and richness.

About the Vineyard

The vineyard was planted out in 1992 with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sylvaner grapes. The grey loam, high-clay soil and reliable rainfall provide excellent growing conditions for these varieties.

The Huon Valley sits on the same degree of latitude as Bordeaux in France (albeit forty-three degrees south of the equator rather than north). These regions share a similar climate, with winters featuring fog, frost and snow, and an abundance of spring rain. This allows for the slow ripening of fruit during warm months and the perfect conditions for cool climate wine to be produced.

Huon Valley

The Huon Valley is Tasmania’s southernmost wine region, and by extension, the southernmost wine region in all of Australia.

Following the winding path of the Huon River from Lake Pedder to the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, this region offers a unique cool-climate growing environment. The north-facing vineyards are sheltered from the cold southerly winds, benefiting instead from a maritime-influenced climate.

The gentle warmth of summer allows for a slow, extended ripening season, resulting in high-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines.

This extended growing period enhances the complexity and finesse of the wines produced here, making the Huon Valley an ideal region for crafting elegant, cool-climate varieties.
