The Dr Edge Pinot Noir 2023 is a bold and expressive blend, combining 70% Derwent Valley and 30% Tamar Valley fruit to capture the essence of Tasmania’s cool-climate terroirs.

This wine undergoes a distinctive process with a range of maceration techniques, including whole cluster inclusion, hand stomp, foot stomp, and even bum stomp, to extract maximum flavour and texture from the grapes.

The natural Pied de Cuve method is used to kickstart fermentation with wild yeasts, after which the wine is pressed into old oak casks for 9 months of gentle ageing.

Bottled without filtration or fining agents, this Pinot Noir is a pure and unadulterated expression of the land, showcasing vibrant fruit, refined structure, and the wild character of Dr Edge’s house style.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Ripe red berries, earthy notes, and a hint of wild spice.

Palate: Bold, with layers of red fruits, fine tannins, and a delicate oak influence from old casks.

Finish: Long and textured, with a balance of fruit and savoury elements.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for the Dr Edge Pinot Noir 2023 is hands-on and experimental, employing techniques that bring out the raw character of the fruit.

Grapes from the Derwent Valley and Tamar Valley are macerated using a variety of methods—whole cluster inclusion, hand stomp, foot stomp, and even the quirky bum stomp—to ensure full extraction of flavour and tannin. Natural fermentation is carried out using the Pied de Cuve method, which relies on wild yeast to initiate fermentation.

After pressing, the wine is aged in old oak casks for 9 months, allowing it to develop complexity without overwhelming oak influence. The wine is bottled without filtration or fining, preserving its natural texture and flavour profile.

About the Vineyard

Dr Edge is the passion project of winemaker Peter Dredge, a renowned Pinot Noir specialist with extensive experience in Tasmania’s wine industry. After gaining valuable experience at Petaluma and Ashton Hills, and later as the senior winemaker at Bay of Fires, Peter established his eponymous brand to push the boundaries of winemaking and experiment with Tasmania’s unique terroirs.

Peter sources fruit from three distinct single vineyard sites across Tasmania—Tamar Valley in the north, East Coast, and Derwent Valley in the south. Each vineyard offers a unique expression of the land, from the gravel soils of Joe Holyman’s vineyard in the Tamar Valley, to the volcanic soils of the East Coast, and the sandy soils of Meadowbank in the Derwent Valley.

The Dr Edge Pinot Noir 2023 is a blend of fruit from these regions, crafted to showcase the diversity of Tasmania’s terroirs with minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of each site to shine through.

Derwent Valley

The Derwent Valley wine region, located to the north-west of Hobart, stretches from the lower reaches of the River Derwent at Granton to the scenic hills and valleys around Meadowbank.

The region's vineyards are perched on north-facing hillsides, which provide ideal sun exposure for grape growing. Known for its cool climate, the area primarily produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling, echoing Tasmania’s wider wine production focus.

Although once regarded as a marginal area for viticulture due to its cooler climate, the upper reaches of the Derwent Valley have recently gained recognition for producing stunning examples of cool-climate wines, reflecting the unique terroir of the region.
